Furniture, artwork, glass and other items from the Jane Holmes Residence in Wilkinsburg will be among nearly 2,600 lots at Dargate Auction Galleries' Winter Auction.
On Jan. 25-27, the Point Breeze auction house will also offer 17th- and 18th-century European furniture, tapestries, chandeliers and mirrors from the Vernon Regal Collection of Pittsburgh and the estate of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Mather of Bratenahl, Ohio.
The Holmes furniture expected to draw the highest bids is a heavily carved golden oak dining suite (lot 2392) made in the late 1800s or early 1900s. The 9-foot-long table, sideboard, server, eight side chairs and two armchairs is expected to bring $6,000 to $8,000. Other notable furniture includes an early 1900s Elliott nine-tube tall case clock made of mahogany ($3,500 to $4,500) and three sets of four Pennsylvania twig rockers ($400 to $600 per set).
Two 1800s Italian paintings in gilded frames have the highest pre-auction estimates of the nearly 50 lots from the Holmes Residence. An 1890 pastoral landscape by Ettore Roesler Franz is estimated to sell for $8,000 to $12,000, and a painting of two peasant women by Francesco Ballesio has an estimate of $6,000 to $9,000.
