Tux Shoes

Create Your Perfect Wedding Ceremony - Wear the Perfect (Comfortable) Shoes at Your Perfect Wedding

by Ann Keeler Evans

You won't have fun at your wedding if your feet hurt. I can't say that too many times. This is as true for men as it is for women. It's actually fairly difficult to concentrate on what's being said about you at your wedding ceremony, what important promises you are making in your wedding vows, how your community is promising to support you when all you can think about is "OW." You've seen the brides and grooms whose shoes are uncomfortable. They're the ones who spend their time shifting from foot to foot. Sometimes it's nerves, but too often it's not.

Grooms: Those rent-a-tux shoes are often uncomfortable. And when the sun shines on them they melt onto your foot. You deserve to wear really comfortable shoes. And actually, if you have to stand on your feet all day (you were thinking this was permission to wear flip flops, ha!), you want shoes that support you. Go buy good-looking black dress shoes that are comfortable. Often if you go to a department store, clerks are prepared to answer the question, "what kind of shoe can I wear with a tux that I will be able to wear later?" And then buy some wonderful dress shoes. For some reason, men have been able to have dress shoes that are comfortable. So you're in luck.

Brides: This is tricky. Many women don't even know they are allowed to have comfortable shoes. This is permission. It's also encouragement. And again, you will be on your feet all day. You want your feet to look beautiful and you don't want your legs to feel as if they're going to fall off or your back to hurt! Women have more options in the shoe department, so here are some things to consider:

  • Do you have a shoe style or a shoe manufacturer whose shoes really fit your feet? Do they make wedding shoes?
  • What style shoe will suit your dress best?
  • What height heel works for you? (3 ½" heels are hard for all day!) What can you walk well in? What can you stand well in?
  • If you're getting married on the lawn, your heel needs to be wide enough not to sink into the dirt. Ruins the walk and the look!
  • If you blister easily, and you're not wearing hose, make sure that you know the sore spots and that they're padded. Bloody, blistered feet add nothing to your wedding look.
  • Order early so you have time to return them when they don't fit or aren't comfortable.
  • Wear your shoes around the house. Break them in. And before you wear them to the wedding, scuff up the soles a little (your shoe store or shoe repair guy will probably do this, slippery soles are treacherous.)

You can bring another pair of shoes to the wedding, but once you're at the wedding, you're not going to want to stop to change your shoes, you're really not going to want to HAVE to stop to change your shoes. Why not just go ahead and step confidently into your future in shoes that are comfortable and beautiful. Marriage is a long journey. You need good shoes!
